# Activating Zigpoll on Shopify Checkout Extensions

Add the Zigpoll app block in Shopify's checkout editor so surveys appear on the Thank You and Order Status pages

Shopify's Thank You and Order Status pages now use [Checkout Extensibility](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/checkout-extensibility). These pages don't run scripts from apps. For a Zigpoll survey to appear on them, or on customer account pages, add the **Zigpoll app block** in Shopify's checkout editor.

The app block is a separate install from the theme **App Embed**, which runs storefront surveys. A store that shows on-site surveys still needs the app block before post-purchase surveys appear. See [Shopify App](/shopify-app.md).

Zigpoll's Shopify delivery templates are named after the pages in the checkout editor, so you can match each survey to the page that needs the app block:

| Zigpoll delivery template    | Shopify editor page(s)                     | Plan         |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ | ------------ |
| **Thank You & Order Status** | Thank you, Order status | All plans |
| **Order Status Only** | Order status | All plans |
| **Checkout Steps** | Information, Shipping, Payment | Shopify Plus |
| **Customer Accounts** | Orders, Profile (customer accounts editor) | All plans |

## Upgrading your Thank You and Order Status pages

Shopify retired the old Thank You and Order Status pages. Shopify's deadline for merchants to upgrade was **August 26, 2026**. On upgraded stores, anything added through **Order status page additional scripts** no longer runs. That includes the older Zigpoll embed code, so a post-purchase survey that relied on it stops appearing.

Shopify's own guide covers the upgrade: [Upgrading to Checkout Extensibility](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/checkout-extensibility/checkout-upgrade).

{% hint style="warning" %}
Upgrading does not carry the Zigpoll survey over. After you upgrade, add the Zigpoll app block to the **new** Thank You page and the **new** Order Status page, using the steps below.
{% endhint %}

If your survey stopped collecting responses after a date and nothing changed in Zigpoll, check whether your store upgraded these pages around that date.

## Add the Zigpoll app block

1. Install the Zigpoll app from the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/zigpoll).
2. In Shopify admin, go to **Settings → Checkout → Customize**.
3. Select **Thank you** from the page dropdown at the top of the editor.
4. Click **Add app block** and select **Zigpoll**.
5. Drag the block to where you want the survey to appear. Higher on the page is seen by more buyers.
6. Click **Save**.
7. Select **Order status** from the page dropdown and repeat steps 4–6.

{% hint style="info" %}
When you create your first **Thank You & Order Status** survey, the Zigpoll dashboard shows an **Open checkout editor** button that takes you straight to this screen in your Shopify admin.
{% endhint %}

You can still manage all of your surveys from the Zigpoll dashboard. You don't need to change the block when you edit a survey or swap which survey is live.

## Choosing which survey the block shows

The block doesn't store a survey. Each time the page loads, Zigpoll serves the first live survey whose delivery template matches that page. A survey using **Thank You & Order Status** shows on both pages, and **Order Status Only** shows on Order status alone.

To change which survey buyers see:

1. In Zigpoll, open the survey and go to **Settings → Delivery → Format**. Choose an on-site or page embed format. Link, email and SMS formats never appear in a checkout block.
2. Open the **Locations** tab, click **Use a Template**, and pick **Thank You & Order Status** or **Order Status Only**. Click **Save Changes**.
3. Make sure the survey is **Live**. Hidden and archived surveys are never served to buyers.
4. If more than one live survey uses the same template, hide the ones you don't want showing.

### The Preview survey setting

Click the Zigpoll block in the checkout editor to see its settings. **Preview survey (optional)** changes only what you see inside the editor. Buyers always see the survey your dashboard serves.

| Preview survey value | What the editor shows |
| -------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Not set | Your first live survey for that page. If none is live, a Zigpoll sample survey appears. |
| **My Active Survey** | Your first live survey for that page. If none is live, the block is empty. |
| A named survey, such as **NPS Survey** | Zigpoll's sample survey of that name, not one of your own. |

An empty editor preview with **My Active Survey** selected means no live survey matches that page. A sample survey in the editor is not a sign the block is broken.

The block's other settings adjust copy size, colors and buttons. See [Shopify Checkout Limits](/installation/shopify-checkout-limits.md) for what they control and why your Zigpoll Design settings don't apply here.

## Thank You page vs. Order Status page

The Thank You page appears once, right after purchase. The Order Status page stays available to your customer, from the order confirmation email or their account, long after the order.

* A response dated weeks after the order usually came from the Order Status page.
* To collect answers only at the moment of purchase, remove the Zigpoll block from the **Order status** page in the checkout editor and keep it on **Thank you**.

### Checkout Steps Surveys (Checkout Survey block)

In addition to the Thank You and Order Status pages, the **Checkout Steps** delivery template shows a survey *during* checkout itself, before the order is placed. To add it:

1. Open the checkout editor.
2. Select the **Information**, **Shipping**, or **Payment** page from the dropdown (or **Checkout** if you use the one-page layout).
3. Add the **Checkout Survey** app block.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Shopify requires a **Shopify Plus** plan to add third-party app blocks to the checkout steps. The Thank You and Order Status blocks above are available on all Shopify plans.
{% endhint %}

**Block Checkout (require the survey before continuing).** The Checkout Survey block can require buyers to complete the survey before they continue checkout. This is a **double opt-in**. It only takes effect when **Block Checkout** is enabled in *both* places:

1. In the checkout editor, on the Checkout Survey block's settings, enable **Block Checkout**.
2. In the Zigpoll dashboard, on the survey's Delivery settings, enable **Block Checkout**.

When the checkout editor setting is on, checkout stays closed while the survey loads, so buyers can't slip past during the brief loading window. If checkout appears stuck for buyers, check that both toggles are set the way you intend.

### Customer Account Surveys

The **Customer Accounts** delivery template uses the **Customer Account Survey** block for the new customer accounts experience (profile and order pages). To add it:

1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Settings → Customer accounts → Customize**.
2. Add the **Zigpoll** app block to the profile or order index page.
3. Click **Save**.

## What the checkout can't do

Shopify's checkout sandbox rules out pop-ups, custom fonts and your Zigpoll Design settings on these pages. It also rules out traffic source data and exit intent.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.zigpoll.com/installation/activating-zigpoll-on-shopify-checkout-extensions.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
