# Activating Zigpoll on Shopify POS

Run Zigpoll surveys on the Shopify POS register after a sale or from a smart grid tile

Zigpoll runs inside the **Shopify POS** app on iOS and Android, so you can collect feedback from in-store customers the same way you do online. Surveys are shown on the register: staff can answer on the customer's behalf, or hand the tablet to the customer to fill in themselves.

There are two POS delivery templates. Pick the one that matches how you want the survey to be triggered:

| Zigpoll delivery template | Where it appears in Shopify POS | Triggered by |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| **POS: After Sale** | The post-purchase screen, right after a sale completes | A **Zigpoll Survey** button on the post-sale action menu |
| **POS: Smart Grid Tile** | The POS home screen | A **Zigpoll** tile on your smart grid, tapped at any time |

{% hint style="warning" %}
Shopify does not let apps show anything on the **customer-facing display** (the second screen some registers point at the shopper). POS surveys are always answered on the staff tablet — either by staff, or by handing the tablet to the customer.
{% endhint %}

### Set up

Setup has three parts: create the survey in Zigpoll, switch Zigpoll on in your Shopify POS smart grid editor, then refresh your registers. It takes about five minutes and only has to be done once per store.

#### 1. Create the survey in Zigpoll

1. Install the Zigpoll app from the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/zigpoll) if you haven't already.
2. In the Zigpoll dashboard, create a survey (or open an existing one) and go to **Settings → Delivery**.
3. Under **Locations**, pick the template that matches how you want the survey to be triggered:
   * **POS: After Sale** — shows a button on the register's post-purchase screen after every completed sale.
   * **POS: Smart Grid Tile** — adds a tile to the register's home screen that staff can tap at any time.
4. Add your questions and set the survey **live**. A survey that isn't live never appears on the register.

{% hint style="info" %}
A survey can use only one location template, so create two surveys if you want both a post-sale survey and a tile.
{% endhint %}

#### 2. Switch Zigpoll on in Shopify POS

Both templates are activated from the same screen in your Shopify admin:

1. In Shopify admin, go to **Sales channels → Point of Sale**.
2. Open the **smart grid editor** and choose the smart grid template your registers use (if you have several locations with different layouts, repeat these steps for each template).
3. Click the **Apps** icon in the editor's toolbar to open the **Apps for Point of Sale** panel. Find **Zigpoll survey** under *Zigpoll Customer Surveys* and click it.

Then, depending on the template you chose in Zigpoll:

* **After Sale** — in the Zigpoll survey panel, turn on **Activate on → Post-purchase**.
* **Smart Grid Tile** — on the grid preview, click **Add tile → Add app**, choose **Zigpoll survey**, and drag the tile where you want it. You can rename the tile and pick a color in the tile's panel.

Press **Save** in the top right. Changes are pushed to every register that uses this template.

#### 3. Refresh your registers

1. Make sure the **Shopify POS app** on each register is up to date (App Store / Play Store).
2. **Sign out of POS and sign back in**, or pull down to refresh the home screen. Registers load app changes when they sync, so a register that stays signed in can keep showing the old layout for a while.

#### Test it

* **After Sale**: add any product to the cart, tap **Checkout**, and complete the sale (cash is fine). On the post-purchase screen, tap **Zigpoll survey** — the survey opens in a full-screen modal. Answer it, and the response appears in your Zigpoll dashboard under *Responses* within a few seconds, tagged with the POS order name and location.
* **Smart Grid Tile**: tap the **Zigpoll** tile on the home screen. Each tap starts a fresh survey, so the same register can be handed to customer after customer.

The survey closes itself when the last question is answered; the **×** in the modal's header closes it early.

{% hint style="info" %}
If a survey is set to show once per customer, the After Sale button still appears for a returning customer but opens with a "no survey to show" message.
{% endhint %}

### What Zigpoll records

Each POS response is tagged with the sale it came from and where it was taken, so you can segment in-store feedback:

* **Location** — the POS location's name and id (for example `Toronto Store`), so you can compare stores
* **Staff member** — the id of the staff member pinned into the register
* **Order name** — the POS order the survey followed, on After Sale surveys
* **Customer** — when the sale had a customer attached, the response is linked to their Shopify customer record like any other Shopify survey

### Permissions

Reading a location's name needs one Shopify permission that Zigpoll didn't previously ask for: **Read locations** (`read_locations`). It is used for nothing else.

* **New installs** grant it as part of the normal install screen.
* **Stores that installed Zigpoll before August 2026** are shown Shopify's approval screen for the new permission the next time the app reconnects to the store (for example when you open Zigpoll from your Shopify admin after a token renewal). Until it's approved, POS surveys still work and still record the location **id** — only the name is missing.

See [Shopify Permissions](/faq/shopify-permissions.md) for what every permission Zigpoll requests is used for.

### Question types on POS

Every question type works on POS except **File Upload**, which is hidden from the question picker on POS surveys because the register has no file picker. A few types look slightly different on the register to fit the POS interface:

* **Dropdown**, **Country** and **Autocomplete** show as a searchable list instead of a native dropdown
* **Consent** shows as a toggle
* **Promo Code** shows the code as text with a QR code the customer can scan, since there is no clipboard on the register
* **Actions** show each link as a QR code for the customer to scan with their own phone

### Common questions

**The button or tile isn't showing.** Work through these in order:

| Check                                                                                                                                                                     | Where                                                                      |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The survey is **live** and uses **POS: After Sale** or **POS: Smart Grid Tile** | Zigpoll dashboard → the survey → Settings → Delivery |
| Zigpoll is activated on the smart grid template the register uses (**Post-purchase** toggle for After Sale, the tile added for Smart Grid) and the template was **saved** | Shopify admin → Point of Sale → smart grid editor → Apps for Point of Sale |
| The register is on that template and at the location you expect | Shopify admin → Point of Sale → Smart grid → template → Locations |
| The POS app is up to date and has been **signed out and back in** since you saved | The register |

**The survey opens but says "No survey to show".** The register reached Zigpoll but no live survey matched: check the template on the survey, and whether it's limited to once per customer.

**Can customers answer on their own phone instead?** Yes — use an **Actions** or **Promo Code** question to show a QR code, or share the survey by [link](/survey-links.md) or QR code on the receipt.

**Can I send the survey by email or SMS after an in-store sale?** Yes. The [Email](/email-zigpoll-surveys.md) and [SMS](/tutorials/sms-surveys.md) delivery formats trigger on Shopify order events, and POS orders fire those events too.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.zigpoll.com/installation/activating-zigpoll-on-shopify-pos.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
