# Creating a Survey

The four steps between "New Survey" and a survey you can preview

From **Surveys**, click **New Survey**. Zigpoll walks you through four steps, with a live preview of the survey beside them the whole way. Each finished step collapses into a one-line summary you can click to go back and change.

The **New Survey** button is also a menu, so you can jump straight to the part of step 1 you want — *Start from Scratch*, *Start with a Template*, *Generate with AI* — or **Import from JSON** to bring in a survey exported from another account (see [Migrate a Survey to Another Account](/polls/migrate-survey.md)).

## Step 1 — What questions do you want to ask?

Three cards choose how you start:

|                        |                                                                                                                      |
| ---------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Use a Template**     | Start with a pre-built survey from our library.                                                                      |
| **Start from Scratch** | Write your own questions, one question at a time. |
| **Use a Prompt** | Describe your goal and AI writes the survey. See [Creating Surveys with AI](/tutorials/creating-surveys-with-ai.md). |

### The template gallery

Picking **Use a Template** opens the gallery underneath. Every template is a card, and the picture on it is drawn from the template's own questions: one row per question, marked by what it asks for — a set of choices, a text box, a rating scale, or a paragraph for a screen that just says something. A short survey draws a short sheet; a long one runs off the bottom of the page. Under the title, each card says how many questions it asks and where we'd suggest delivering it, for example *5 questions · Thank You & Order Status*.

Click **Learn more** on any card to read the full question list before you commit to it.

Templates are grouped into categories, and the heading of the category you are looking at sticks under the search bar as you scroll:

* **Recommended for you** — a shortlist picked for your account, at the top
* **AI Generated** — surveys you have generated from a prompt, so you can reuse them
* **Post Purchase** — Simple, Returning Customers, General, Checkout Satisfaction, Delivery Process, Returns Process
* **Attribution & Discovery** — Attribution, In-Depth Attribution, Customer Segmentation, Competitor Comparison, Word of Mouth, New Visitor
* **Customer Satisfaction** — NPS, Customer Experience, Overall Satisfaction, Product Market Fit, CSAT, CES
* **Exit Intent & Abandoned Cart** — Pre-Purchase Exit, Abandoned Checkout, Exit Intent, Abandoned Purchase, Exit Probe, Reduce Abandonment
* **Feedback & Optimization** — Conversion Rate, Site Feedback, Feature Feedback, Product Descriptions, Site Navigation, Search Experience
* **Engagement** — Contact Us, Giveaway, Reward Email Capture, Customer Goals, Sign-Up Blockers, Improve Sign Up
* **Software (SaaS)** — Product-Market Fit, Onboarding, Upgrade, Downgrade, Cancellation, Feature Requests

Use the search box to filter by name, or **Filter Categories** to hide the groups you don't need. Categories show everything they hold — nothing is tucked away behind a "show more".

{% hint style="info" %}
A template is a starting point, not a commitment. Once the survey is created you can edit, reorder, add and delete questions freely — see [Questions](/polls/question-settings.md).
{% endhint %}

## Step 2 — How do you want to deliver your survey?

The same card treatment picks where and how the survey goes out. **Recommended** sits at the top with the placements that suit the questions you just chose, and the best one is already selected — so if the defaults are right you can simply carry on.

Below that, the rest are grouped:

* **General** — Every Page, Homepage Only, Homepage Pop Up, Feedback, Link Only, Synthetic Research
* **Ecommerce** — Thank You & Order Status, Order Status Only, Checkout Steps, Product Pages, Cart Page, Collections Pages, Customer Accounts, POS: After Sale, POS: Smart Grid, Exit Intent
* **Email & SMS** — Abandoned Checkout, Order Paid, Order Fulfillment, Order Delivered, Order Cancelled, and an **Email Campaign** you send to a list yourself. Stripe and Square accounts get their own events (Checkout Completed, Charge Refunded, New Subscription, Subscription Cancelled, Payment Completed, Refund Processed, Order Fulfilled).
* **Manual** — API Only, Embed Code Snippet, Configure Manually

Cards that depend on an integration carry that platform's mark in the corner, and options that need a connection you don't have aren't offered. **Learn more** shows the exact page rules a placement will set.

**Email Campaign** carries an Email / SMS switch, so you can send the same campaign either way; the card and its details follow whichever you pick.

Everything chosen here is editable afterwards on **Settings → Delivery** — see [Delivery Settings](/polls/visibility-settings.md).

***

## Step 3 — How should this survey behave?

A short step that only appears when the delivery you picked has something worth asking about. Depending on the placement, that is:

* **Pop-up Settings** — when the survey appears on the page
* **Exit Intent Settings** — sensitivity, timer, device and exit prompt
* **Email / SMS Settings** — which event sends the survey and how long to wait after it
* **Targeting Rules** — which customers or checkouts should see it (Shopify)
* **Re-engagement** — [Nudge Non-Responders](/polls/nudge-non-responders.md), a one-time reminder for people who don't answer

Anything not asked here has a sensible default and can be changed later under **Settings**.

***

## Step 4 — Name it

Give the survey a title you'll recognise in your list later, such as "Post Purchase Survey 09/2026", then click **Create Survey**.

New surveys are created **hidden**, so you can preview them before anyone sees them. When you're happy, switch the survey to visible.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.zigpoll.com/polls/creating-a-survey.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
