# Post Purchase Survey

Create a survey that appears on your Shopify thank you page, from picking the template to reading the first responses

A post purchase survey appears on the **Thank You** page the moment an order is placed, and optionally on the **Order Status** page the customer returns to afterwards. It is the highest-response survey placement Zigpoll offers, and every answer is tied to the order, so you can see order value alongside each response.

This tutorial covers the full setup. If you're deciding what to ask, start with [How to Build a Post-Purchase Survey Customers Actually Answer](/guides/how-to-build-a-post-purchase-survey.md).

#### Step #1: Create Your Survey

1. Go to **Surveys → New Survey**.
2. For the questions, click **Use a Template** and open the **Post Purchase** or **Attribution & Discovery** category. **Simple** (post purchase) and **Attribution** are the usual starting points. Click **Learn more** on a card to see its questions, or **Start from Scratch** to write your own.
3. For the delivery method, select **Thank You & Order Status**. It will usually already be selected under **Recommended**. Choose **Order Status Only** if you want the survey on the Order Status page but not the Thank You page.
4. If you want the survey shown only to certain customers, set **Targeting Rules** on the next step. The **New Customers** and **Returning Customers** presets are the most common. You can skip this and add rules later under **Settings → Targeting**.
5. Give the survey a title and click **Create Survey**.

New surveys are created hidden, so nothing shows to customers yet.

#### Step #2: Add the Zigpoll Block to Your Checkout

Shopify's Thank You and Order Status pages don't run scripts from apps. For the survey to appear, the **Zigpoll app block** needs to be in your checkout editor. This is a one-time setup for the store, not per survey.

1. In the Zigpoll dashboard, after creating your first Thank You & Order Status survey, click **Open checkout editor**. Or in Shopify admin, go to **Settings → Checkout → Customize**.
2. Select **Thank you** from the page dropdown at the top of the editor.
3. Click **Add app block** and select **Zigpoll**.
4. Drag the block to where you want the survey. Higher on the page is seen by more buyers.
5. Click **Save**.
6. Select **Order status** from the page dropdown and repeat steps 3–5. Skip this page if you only want responses from the moment of purchase.

The block doesn't store a survey. Each time the page loads, Zigpoll serves the first live survey whose delivery template matches that page, so you can swap surveys from the dashboard without touching the editor again. The full guide, including the block's preview setting and what the checkout can and can't display, is here:

[Activating Zigpoll on Shopify Checkout Extensions](/installation/activating-zigpoll-on-shopify-checkout-extensions.md)
{% endcontent-ref %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
If you ran a post purchase survey through **Order status page additional scripts** before your store upgraded its checkout, that method no longer works. Add the app block as above. See [Legacy Post Purchase Installation](/tutorials/legacy-post-purchase-installation.md).
{% endhint %}

#### Step #3: Preview and Go Live

1. Open the survey and check the questions in the [preview](/polls/poll-preview.md). The checkout editor also shows the block with your first live survey, or a sample survey if none is live yet.
2. Flip the visibility switch in the top right corner of the survey to make it **Live**.
3. Place a test order on your store. The survey should appear on the Thank You page below the block's position.

If it doesn't appear, work through the checkout section of [Why Is My Survey Not Showing?](/faq/why-is-my-survey-not-showing.md). The usual causes are the block not being saved on that page, or the survey still hidden.

#### Step #4: Read the Responses

1. Open the survey's dashboard. Each question shows the answer breakdown, and the **Typical** line under the response rate shows how your survey compares to other Shopify checkout surveys. See [Response Rate Benchmarks](/response-rate-benchmarks.md).
2. Below each question's responses, Zigpoll lists the **total order value** and **average order value** for each answer. See [Post Purchase Order Stats](/tutorials/order-stats.md).
3. On a "How did you hear about us?" question, write-ins are read automatically and filed under a channel, so the "Other" pile becomes a ranked list. See [Attribution Surveys](/tutorials/attribution-surveys.md).
4. Open **Insights** to have Z-GPT summarize open-ended answers, or ask Z-GPT Chat a question in plain language.

#### Next Steps

* **Show different surveys to different customers.** One survey for first-time buyers, another for returning buyers, a third for high-value orders. See [Layered Post Purchase Surveys](/tutorials/layered-post-purchase-surveys.md) and [Advanced Shopify Targeting](/tutorials/advanced-shopify-targeting.md).
* **Follow up after delivery.** The Thank You page can't ask about the product, because it hasn't arrived. Add an [Order Delivery Survey](/tutorials/order-delivery-survey.md) for that.
* **Remind people who skipped it.** [Nudge Non-Responders](/polls/nudge-non-responders.md) emails one reminder to buyers who saw the survey but didn't answer.
* **Lift the response rate.** End the survey with a [discount code](/tutorials/adding-discount-codes-to-your-survey.md).
* **See what other brands found.** What thousands of post-purchase surveys turned up and what brands did next: [What Brands Have Learned with Zigpoll](/guides/what-brands-have-learned.md).
* **Send answers to your other tools.** Tag the Shopify customer or order, or write the answer to [Klaviyo](/integrations/klaviyo.md), with a [Question Logic](/questions/question-logic.md) action.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.zigpoll.com/tutorials/post-purchase-survey.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
